I hope today’s posting finds everyone well. As the title suggests I am going to quickly discuss an app that I believe anyone who enjoys making beautiful photos should have on their iPhone and/or iPad. Before I do that I want to discuss the importance of lighting in photography. Specifically, the magical lighting which occurs just after sunrise and just before the sun melts away into the horizon at sunset. Photographers fondly refer to this time of day as “golden hour” as the landscape is bathed in the most magical golden light. Whether you are photographing a majestic landscape, a beautiful flower, or capturing a precious moment spent with your family your photograph will benefit from this magical light. I often suggest to amateur photographers who want to improve their photography to put away their camera from 10 am to 4 pm and take better advantage of “golden hour”. Beautiful light has the ability to transform an average landscape into an extraordinary photo and conversely poor light will degrade a extraordinary landscape into an average photograph.
Now that I have laid out the importance of “golden hour” I am going to strongly suggest that you purchase the app “SOL”. This app takes the guesswork out of knowing when sunrise, sunset or golden hour will occur at any location. I personally use the app all the time. Knowing when “golden hour” will occur allows me to work backwards and plan my travel times and routes. There is nothing more disappointing to a photographer than arriving late on site to capture that magnificent sunset. Albert Einstein once said that “Chance favoured the prepared mind…” and I think this quote is so suitable when talking about photography.
